By car: A dog-friendly Scottish road trip

If you’re planning to take the car, Argyll is a picturesque drive away from Scotland’s main cities:

  • Aberdeen – approx. 3hr 40
  • Dundee – approx. 2hr 26 min

Discovering Argyll, a guide for you and your dog

Our country house retreat offers everything you need for the perfect dog-friendly getaway – you may not want to leave! But if you decide to venture a little further afield, here are our top picks for what to do, where to go, and what to see.

Explore scenic hikes and walking trails in Argyll

Argyll is home to some of Scotland’s most scenic trails – perfect for dogs who love roaming outdoors. From forest walks to more challenging Munros, we have created a separate blog dedicated to our favourite dog-friendly walks in the area. You will be spoiled for choice!

Discover Argyll’s dog-friendly beaches

The West Coast has beautiful beaches aplenty, perfect for running along the sandy shores and dipping paws into the cool Scottish waters.

One of our favourites, tucked away to the north of Oban, lies the serene Ganavan Sands. From here, you can take in stunning views of the calm waters stretching to Mull, Lismore, and Morven while your dog explores this scenic beach. For those seeking a bit more adventure, a hike over the cliffs leads to Dunstaffnage Castle, a historic site dating back to the 13th century.

We would be remiss not to mention our own little sandy haven at Loch Melfort Hotel. At the end of our garden path lies a shimmering shoreline, the perfect spot to stretch those legs and enjoy the sea views. You can find us here most mornings with our dogs Harris and Rocket, who loves to rummage around the rock pools to see what treasures he can find.

Must-visit historical sites in Argyll

inveraray castle

Inveraray Castle is one of Argyll’s unmissable attractions. Although dogs are not allowed inside the castle itself, you can still explore the estate and enjoy the surrounding woodland walks, taking in the grandeur of this historic building. When it’s time to rest those feet and paws, head to the Tearoom, where well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome. On the other hand, Inveraray Jail is dog-friendly throughout (except the Escape Room), where they are welcome to step back in time and tour the 19th-century prison with you.

Dog-friendly pubs, cafes and restaurants in Argyll

Argyll boasts many pubs, cafés, and restaurants where dogs are warmly welcomed – offering water bowls, dog treats, and even special menus for your four-legged companions! Whether you’re after a cosy pub with a roaring fire or a charming café, Argyll has it all. Here are a few of our favourites:

Loch Melfort Hotel – Why not enjoy a peaceful meal with a view on our spacious outdoor decking area? Choose a delicious dish from our bistro favourites menu, sit back and relax as you look out towards the sea with your furry friend curled up at your feet. Sections of our indoor restaurant are also dog-friendly!

Lucy’s Ardfern – Just a short drive (10 minutes) from our hotel you will find Lucy’s, a lovely dog-friendly café with a delightful honesty fridge. The fresh bakes and local produce are popular with locals and visitors alike, and they have even been featured in The Times.

Cuan Mor – This popular restaurant in Oban town centre is known for its excellent quality, local produce and stunning views of Oban Bay. Their restaurant has a dog-friendly section, so you don’t need to miss out on some of the best seafood Oban has to offer!

The Oyster Inn – This cosy restaurant, bar and beer garden in the village of Connel, just a 30-minute drive from our hotel, is a hit with visitors who love the local Scottish produce and friendly atmosphere. While you’re there, be sure to visit the awe-inspiring Falls of Lora, a natural tidal waterfall that forms when the tidal level in the Firth of Lorn drops below the water level in Loch Etive.

Exploring Scotland’s dog-friendly Isles

Island hopping on the Scottish West Coast

Isle of Kerrera off Oban Bay

The Isle of Seil is linked to the mainland by the 200-year-old Clachan Bridge, famously known as the “Bridge across the Atlantic”. There’s much to discover, including a visit to the dog-friendly Tigh an Truish Inn. The name “Tigh an Truish” translates to “house of the trousers,” a reference to the period following the 1745 Jacobite rebellion when kilts were banned. It’s said that islanders travelling to the mainland would stop here to change from their kilts into trousers. Seil offers several scenic walks, including Puilladobhran (the Pool of the Otters) just behind the pub, perfect for a post-lunch stroll.

If you want to venture further, the Isle of Luing is just a short ferry ride from Seil. The council-run ferry departs from the mainland every half hour, and the crossing, which spans just 200 yards of water, takes less than 5 minutes. Luing is full of natural beauty waiting to be discovered. On arrival, begin your day with a coffee at the dog-friendly café at the Atlantic Islands Centre, where you can grab a “Routes around the Isle of Luing” booklet that outlines the best walks on the island. We suggest heading to Toberonochy on the island’s East Coast, where you will find a lovely village and lots of beachside walks to explore.

The small island of Easdale is perfect for a few hours of exploration. Just a 3-minute journey by a charming little passenger boat from the Isle of Seil, you will arrive on the former slate island. Despite no cars, farming, crofting or livestock, this unique island has plenty to offer! Our top tip is to climb the island’s only hill, where you will be rewarded with stunning views, and you may even be lucky enough to spot seals, dolphins and even whales! The Oyster Bar, the island’s family-run restaurant, is dog-friendly and has a lovely outdoor seating area looking out over the Atlantic.

One of our favourite day-trip destinations is the Isle of Kerrera. This hidden gem is just a quick ferry ride away with Calmac Ferries, departing from Gallanach near Oban. We’ve even put together a blog to help you make the most of your visit, with plenty to see and do on the island.

The Isle of Lismore, nestled between Oban and Mull, is just a 5-minute passenger ferry ride from Appin. Make sure to visit the Lismore Gaelic Heritage Centre, which features a museum, cottage, shop, and library—perfect for getting to know the island. Stretching 12 miles long and only 1.5 miles wide at its widest point, Lismore is ideal for a day of discovery.
