Grab your day bag, a camera, and your swim gear (yes, really!), and get ready for a day out that will be sure to leave the kids tired out and happy. There’s plenty to keep the little ones (and the big kids) entertained around the grounds of Loch Melfort Hotel.
We asked some of our recent mini visitors to tell us about their Loch Melfort highlights – because who better to ask than the REAL decision makers of your family? Without further ado, here are 6 reasons to visit Loch Melfort Hotel with the kids: a great day trip, just 30 minutes from Oban.
Wildlife bingo on the point
You don’t need much to take part in your own Highland wildlife expedition, just some sturdy footwear and a good eye! Our pebbly beach and rocky point are brilliant spots to turn over stones and explore the shallow pools for tiny sea critters. We’ve come across many sea urchins, octopi, starfish, jellyfish, and plenty of crabs. Further out to sea, you might be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of a porpoise, otter or a curious seal – their smooth heads bobbing up from the waters to investigate the goings on of the land.
Highland wild swimming for children
The addition of our new garden path makes it easier than ever to skip down to our little Loch Melfort beach, because who doesn’t love a splash in the sea? With adult supervision, the sandy bay that sits at the tip of our grounds is a revitalising spot to dip your toes and coordinate your own stone stacking competition.
Tuck into our new kids menu
Small tummies are just as important as grown-up ones, so our talented Chef’s have come up with a special kid’s menu filled with child-sized portions sure to tempt even the fussiest of pallets. Alongside firm favourites like hamburgers, pasta, and chocolate ice-cream, little diners can also tuck into fresh local dishes such as our Battered Oban Haddock with hand cut chips and peas.
Meet the friendly animals of Loch Melfort Hotel
Our well-loved grounds have long been known as one of the best places to see Highland cows in the Scottish Highlands. Although you can find these friendly beasts in many locations across the country, it’s not as common to find a spot from which you can get close enough to attempt a head scratch. And, speaking of head scratches, our naughty goat duo, Bracken and Thistle, love nothing more than a chin scratch by a friendly hand. Head down to our gates at feeding time for an enthusiastic coo serenade and watch the goats dodge a coo headbutt as they try to sneak a nibble from big Dougal’s bucket.
Younger children with a fondness for smaller animals will be delighted by the hundreds of rabbits that bound across our lawns throughout the day. For guests spending a night in our Sea View Lodges, a peak out of your windows in the wee hours of the morning should reward you with a bunny bonanza – hundreds of rabbits eagerly nibbling their way through the Loch Melfort flowers (much to owner Calum’s dismay!).

Conquer the kids play area
The Loch Melfort Hotel kids play area has individual swings for both infants and older children, alongside an adventurous cargo rope and climbing board. Overlooking the islands and Highland waters, the slides, climbing frames, and play huts provide a safe, fun place for young children to explore.
A spot of shopping in our Highland gift shop
What is a day out without a little token to remember it by? In our Highland gift shop, we showcase a broad mix of small business gifts, aimed at helping you find the perfect presents for just about anyone. Kids love our environmentally friendly wooden bug hotels, encouraging them head home and help their garden become a hive of activity. They’ll also love picking out gifts for grandparents and family friends – our Scottish scenery note cards are a great way to get them excited about writing letters and keeps them busy during lunch!
During the summer months, our Restaurant and decking areas can fill up very quickly. To avoid disappointment, we recommend you book a table for your family ahead of your visit.
