Ardbeg Whisky is synonymous with Islay, taking its water from from the nearby Loch Uigeadail. The distillery sits just by the water, by a tranquil pier. Ardbeg uses the smokiest peat in the business, which makes for some rather intense flavours and aromas in its whiskies.
Ardbeg Corryvreckan is a very special malt, once named the World’s Single Best Malt. Ardbeg Corryvreckan sits in a lineage of “no-age” statement whiskies which focus on flavours rather than on a set maturation time. Whilst some of these no-age whiskies don’t always deliver, Ardbeg Corryvreckan is definitely a must-try. Non chill-filtered at 57.1%, like the whirlpool of its name, it is pretty impressive and somewhat breathtaking. Swirl it around to appreciate its peppery, meaty and seaweed notes. Then as your palate accommodates, you will taste heady and intense notes of dark chocolate, tar, blackcurrants and coffee, then star anise and cherry. It’s very smoky and very rich but the taste sensations are rather amazing.
A serious malt from the seriously beautiful isle of Islay.
