What’s your favourite Single Malt?

Whether it’s the powerful smoke of a Lagavulin, the light, cereal notes of a Jura, or something in the middle like the woodsmoke sweetness of an Oban, we are sure to have what you’re looking for.

Here at Loch Melfort Hotel we are surrounded by some of the most famous distilleries not just in Scotland but in the world. With truly magnificent views spanning over Loch Melfort to Islay, just nineteen miles away from the famous distillery of Oban, a whisky lover will feel right at home in our cosy hotel.

The heavily peated island of Islay is just a short boat trip away from us. So take a sail over and choose from eleven different distilleries to explore.

What will you find at a distillery?

Many distilleries have a visitor centre offering basic tours that range in admission charges between £5 to £8. This includes a guide leading a small group through the distillery and explaining the process, giving you an exclusive experience of whisky production.

The tour is followed by a complimentary tasting that is sure to give you a real insight into the true nature of the dram. What a great way to learn the many different characters and processes of each individual distillery!

The visitor centres often have shops selling their products and even some rare bottlings. You can also find branded merchandise and clothing.

If that is not enough you can always go on a more in-depth tour. These often last over two hours and include a selection of different whiskies to taste. A tasting tour will give you the unique opportunity to sample something more exclusive than your every day bottling.

A little Taste of Scotland

Part of what makes Ardbeg’s flavour so distinctive, for example, is not only the phenol content of the barley but also the fact that the natural spring water (which is the distillery’s only water supply) also runs through peat. This water supply resembles our own at Loch Melfort.

As we are in such a remote location we have a natural water source situated on a hill directly above our hotel. When heavy rain falls our water will acquire a slight golden colouring  which comes from peat. The water is perfectly safe to drink and has been passed through our ultra violet system, then filtered for a truly fresh Scottish flavour!

If you are a fan of whisky you are most likely to also be a fan of excellent food. Our AA 2 Rosette Asknish Bay Restaurant is something really quite special. Here you can enjoy some truly fresh seafood, hand foraged herbs, home-made ice cream, and of course pair it with an appropriate dram.
