Wildlife Diary

The Loch Melfort area abounds with diverse mammals, birds, marine life, insects, flora and fauna and many of our guests delight in telling us their wildlife sightings.

Perhaps you've seen a golden eagle riding the thermals, dolphins jumping through the waves, or a rare orchid hiding in the grass. Whatever you've seen, we would like to know about it, so please fill in the details of your sighting on our wildlife diary form and come back often to keep up with the latest wildlife sightings.

Badger

William spotted a Badger on Sunday, 01 November 2009 at 01:00

My fiancée and I were walking through the wood when a badger ran in front of us. Beautiful looking animal and much bigger in real like that I thought they would be.

Seal

Calum Ross spotted a Seal on Saturday, 31 October 2009 at 16:00

During the same walk, I also spotted a seal. In fairness it has a been regular visitor to the bay for several months now. It always appears quite far out but then works it’s way into the bay often only a few metres away from the shore.

Gannet

Calum Ross spotted a Gannet on Saturday, 31 October 2009 at 15:00

Was walking down towards Arduaine Point when I saw a single Gannet bobbing up and down on the waves in Asknish Bay just a few metres from the shoreline.

Porpoise

Rachel Ross spotted a Porpoise on Friday, 16 October 2009 at 10:00

2 Porpoises swimming just out of the bay between the islands. At low tide you can really see the sea life! Amazingly, given that we are Mid – October, I also watched two humans swimming in wets suits this afternoon across the bay!

Porpoise

Calum Ross spotted a Porpoise on Wednesday, 14 October 2009 at 12:00

Was sitting in the Chartroom Bistro with some friends when I spotted 3 porpoise playing in Asknish Bay. They surfaced several times over the space of about 10 minutes.
