New Highland Cow Arrives!

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

A new brown highland cow, called Dougal, has joined us in the last three weeks and is getting to know Campbell and McDonald, our other two highland cows. The cows are a big hit with the children, who watch the cows from the playground, and come down with their parents at feeding time to help share out the hay.

A new fence is currently being built so the cows can alternate between two fields for feeding. Whilst this is being done we are having a lake dug out ready for a stock of brown trout fish and some ducks.

Arduaine Garden Saved for a Year

Monday, May 25th, 2009

The National Trust for Scotland announced yesterday that there will be a one year reprieve for Arduaine Garden whilst further funding is found – but this is great news.

The decision to save the garden came as part of a consultation on possible property closures all over Scotland. The passionate work of the local community and generosity of support from further afield to save Arduaine Garden from closure seems to have done the trick in swaying the NTS.

So, for the next year everyone interested in saving the Garden long-term future will be engaged in fundraising to support personal donations and NTS funding. The Loch Melfort Hotel, which is right next door to the garden, is now talking to the NTS to explore marketing opportunities.

Anyone interested in helping to save this beautiful national treasure should contact the hotel for details.
